If you love fantasy series like, Graceling, Divergent, or The Mortal Instruments, this series is perfect for you. Filled with unexpected plot twists and characters you'll fall in love with, Red Queen is one of my all time favorites.

Mare Barrow, a seventeen year old girl from the "Stilts" (which is, let's face it, this books version of District 12), knows exactly what her life is going to look like. She has already watched all three of her brothers face conscription, the fate of any eighteen year old that has not found an apprenticeship, and knows that soon enough she'll be taken off to the Choke where death is nearly inevitable. All of this because she and her family are reds, marked by the red blood in their veins as opposed to their silver oppressors, with powers designed to be feared. Her only solace is that both her best friend and youngest sister would never have to follow her to the Choke. But when a few, fatal mistakes, changes both their fates, Mare must do whatever she can to save them from conscription. This journey leads her the Kingdom of Norta's palace where Mare discovers that although she has red blood, she has a unique ability that might just be enough to save her family, and possibly reds everywhere. The palace knows what she can do and are desperate to keep it a secret. Hiding her identity, Mare works behind the scenes with the Scarlet Guard and an unlikely palace ally with hopes to bring the whole system crashing down. Though she has high hopes and even higher connections, the silvers of Norta are cunning, their powers are deadly, and as Mare will learn,
"Anyone can betray anyone."
Mare keeps her love for her family on the forefront, but her love for another might be the Scarlet Guard's downfall.
The Red Queen series is a MUST read. Besides my "district 12" comment, this book has a completely unique plot line and is anything but predictable. The characters in this book are masterfully written and I found myself learning from the moral dilemmas Mare finds herself in right along side her. She's tenacious and loves fiercely, a character well worthy to follow through this four book series. No way could anyone read this book without desperately searching for the next installment, Glass Sword.
